How Does Water-Based Bed Cooling Work? (Eight Sleep, Good Sleep and Others)

How does 8 Sleep work? Woman in deep sleep on a temperature-controlled water-cooled bed

Quick answer: A water-based bed cooling system pairs a bedside hub, which heats or cools water to your set temperature, with a topper or cover laced with thin channels. A hose connects the two, and water circulates all night, carrying body heat away (or adding warmth) the whole time. That's the basic mechanism behind Eight Sleep's Pod, Good Sleep and similar systems.

What's inside the hub?

The hub holds a water reservoir plus the hardware that heats or cools the water and pumps it. In Good Sleep's case you fill the reservoir (about 2 minutes), plug the hub into a grounded outlet and set the temperature on its touch panel. There's no app and no Wi-Fi.

How does water move through the topper?

The topper has micro-channels across the sleep surface. Water leaves the hub through the connection hose, flows under you and returns to the hub to be re-cooled or re-warmed. Because it keeps moving, the surface stays near your setting instead of slowly warming up to body temperature.

Why does water beat gel or "cooling" fabric?

Passive materials absorb heat until they match your body temperature, and then they stop helping. Circulating water carries heat out of the bed for as long as the system runs. Good Sleep's framing: passive products absorb heat, while active water cooling removes it.

How fast does it reach temperature?

Good Sleep says its system reaches the set point in about 15 minutes and then holds it all night.

Is it noisy?

The hub does make a sound. Good Sleep describes its noise as minimal and quieter than a ceiling fan, and one customer quoted on its site calls the hum soothing.

How do you maintain a water-cooled topper?

For Good Sleep: spot-clean the topper with a damp cloth (no machine washing or drying), keep it under your fitted sheet, top up the reservoir now and then, and flush the lines with the included air pump before storing or traveling.

Where do Eight Sleep and Good Sleep differ?

The shared part is the water loop. According to Good Sleep's comparison page, Eight Sleep adds sleep tracking, automatic temperature adjustment and app control, which come with its Autopilot membership. Good Sleep deliberately leaves those out and relies on a touch panel, with no membership. See eightsleep.com for Eight Sleep's current details. Cool in summer, warm in winter

Good Sleep cools to 62°F and heats to 110°F on your existing mattress, with no app and no subscription.
